The Illinois-Michigan Canal was eventually finished in 1848, and in 1864 the first trains on the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad line came through town and to other villages further west. Both contributed greatly to Westmont’s growth and development. Because of the railroad, Westmont shifted from being primarily an agriculture village to more of a commuter center.
